Student Life
At New England Bible College, we believe that students should be treated like responsible adults. Therefore, the rules are few. Each student is expected to keep the code of honor and bring glory to God with his life.
A distinctive of NEBC is that all resident classes are taught in block format. Courses are offered at one time each week, which allows students to more easily schedule employment. However, missing one class means losing a whole week, so attendance is mandatory for all students at all regular classes. Also, it is not recommended that full-time students work more than 20 hours/week.
Attendance is mandatory for all students at all regular classes, special programs, banquets and graduation.
LLearning is internalized when studies are put into practice. Therefore students are required to have a Christian service project in a local church. They are also encouraged to become involved in the social life and activities of the church. College is not a time to “drop out” of fellowship.
Each student is encouraged to have both a personal devotional life before God and be active witness in personal evangelism.
HANDICAPPED STUDENTS
Although we desire to adequately serve all students who come to NEBC, our facilities at this time do not accommodate all handicapped individuals. We will be happy to respond to inquiries regarding specific situations.
STUDENT HOUSING
NEBC is unable to provide student dormitories. Most students either commute or live with family or friends in the area.
However, in most cases, housing for single students at NEBC can also be arranged through Christian families living nearby. Typically this will include a bedroom with study area, meals with the family during the weeks in which classes are held, and storage of the student's property during winter break.
If additional services are desired, or if the student wishes to extend their stay, arrangements would have to be made with the agreement of the host. This type of housing usually costs $2700/year.
Married students must arrange their own housing.
ORIENTATION
Each semester a one day orientation is held the Monday before the beginning of classes. All freshmen and transfer students are expected to attend.
GRADUATION
Graduation is held on Friday evening of exam week in the Spring semester. All students are required to attend.
CHAPEL ATTENDANCE
Weekly chapel attendance is required of all full-time resident students. All
part-time resident students having classes immediately before the chapel period are
also required to attend chapel.
SPIRITUAL LIFE CONFERENCE
In the Spring semester one week is set apart for Spiritual Life Conference. A retreat is held Monday through Wednesday at a nearby camp or conference facility. Students should make plans early to take time off from work, if necessary. All students and staff are urged to attend.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council is comprised of officers elected by the student body of New England Bible College. These officers must be in good academic standing at the College. The term of office shall run concurrently with the fall and spring semesters. In conjunction with a faculty advisor, the Student Council plans and promotes student functions and represents the students to the Academic Dean.
PERSONAL GROOMING AND CLASSROOM ATTIRE
Personal appearance (hair, make-up, etc.) should be neat and clean.
Clothing should be neat, clean, non-offensive and appropriate for an academic setting. The student should avoid overly casual or revealing attire. In a group setting, personal discernment and sensitivity to others are key factors.
Please avoid the overuse of perfume and cologne. Men are asked to remove hats during chapel and prayer times, and in the classroom at the request of faculty.
CODE OF HONOR
As a responsible Christian and as a student at New England Bible College, I recognize that I am expected to:
- Study faithfully in order to develop my mind and understanding;
- Care for my body in order to be physically strong and morally pure;
- Develop my skills in relating to others in order to be positive and cooperative;
- Submit to the control of the Holy Spirit in order to overcome self interest;
- Submit to the authority of the Holy Scriptures in matters of faith and conduct;
- Use my money wisely, recognizing that my education and its cost are a high priority of this phase of my life;
- Invest my life in every way possible to the fulfillment of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ;
- Abstain from sexual relationships outside marriage, abuse of alcohol, illegal drugs, dishonesty, and any emotional entanglements that adversely effect me;
- Utilize my time carefully through the discerning use of entertainment media such as literature, movies, music, the internet and television.
STORM CLOSING
The decision to either close or not close the College will be made on the basis of the storm and snow accumulation in the Portland area. We do not close every time that public and private elementary and high schools close.
Students in outlying districts will have to make their own decisions as to whether or not they will come to school that day. Students are not to call the homes of faculty or staff to see if the College is open.
College closing will be announced on the following radio stations after 6:00 a.m. If you do not hear our college listed on those announcements, we are open. Days lost because of storms will be made up during breaks if the faculty and the Dean determine that they are necessary.
