NEBCS Transition

Why?

For nearly 70 years, NEBCS has sought to provide accessible biblical, theological, and ministry equipping for men and women serving Christ and His Church. We remain compelled by that mission. We are not changing our commitment to solid biblical and ministry education, but what is changing is the primary way we believe we can most faithfully, effectively, and sustainably fulfill that mission in the years ahead.

Over the past several years, we have worked hard to strengthen our programs, expand online and live-Zoom delivery, improve our systems, increase our marketing efforts, and keep tuition remarkably affordable. Even with those efforts, our student numbers have remained moderate. Because tuition covers only a portion of the actual cost of providing degree education, our sustained low tuition and moderate enrollment have led us to the difficult decision to conclude our degree-granting programs at the end of Spring 2028.

What Now?

Even as we made that difficult decision, our Board and leadership asked a larger question: Where is the greatest need in New England, and how can NEBCS use its experience, faculty, partnerships, and resources to meet that need most effectively?

We see an enormous and often underserved need among believers who may never pursue a traditional degree but who nevertheless desire strong biblical and practical ministry preparation.

We believe NEBCS can come alongside pastors and local churches to support their work of equipping believers in areas such as:

  • Evangelism and sharing the gospel;

  • Apologetics and essential Christian theology;

  • Biblical interpretation and understanding Scripture;

  • Disciplemaking and spiritual formation;

  • Leadership development;

  • Practical ministry skills; and

  • Preparation of lay leaders, volunteer ministry workers, and bi-vocational pastoral leaders, particularly for churches that struggle to find full-time pastoral leadership.

In response to these needs, NEBCS is launching the Equip New England Initiative.

How?

Equip New England represents a significant shift in emphasis. Rather than functioning as a degree-granting institution, we are becoming an equipping ministry that comes alongside pastors, local churches, ministries, leaders, and believers. Our goal is to provide accessible biblical training, practical ministry equipping, and leadership development that supports and strengthens the work of local churches and prepares believers to serve fruitfully wherever God has placed them.

Much of this training will be competency- and certificate-based, delivered through workshops, six-week and stackable modules, and cohorts in partnership with churches and other equipping ministries.

This means we are not moving away from serious biblical education and ministry preparation. Rather, we are seeking to make biblical and ministry education more accessible, more flexible, more closely connected to local churches, and available to a much broader group of people.
